Doctors Are Trained To Treat Patients

Doctors are trained to treat patients, not to prevent them from ever getting sick. Gadgets, automation, instant communications on a global scale, and home entertainment eliminated what few healthful activities remained. Yet appetite has not decreased since the time of the hearty farmer’s breakfast. From the school yard to the comfort of your home, advertising, packaging, and instant food delivered to your door provide relentless stimulation, offering countless food choices rich in salt, sugar, and fat that further trigger brain appetite centers. Though the quality of medical care is better than ever, its cost is becoming prohibitive. The solution is to motivate the return of healthy lifestyle practices. But the medical system often stands in the way. But no course in preventive health care is offered in medical school, and a master’s degree in public health is the closest we come to preventive health care education. Healthy people are neglected by our medical system and often penalized for not using doctors’ services. They pay the same premiums, but, unlike the sick, get no tax break on medical expenses if they do not exceed a minimum threshold. There are no financial incentives to remain healthy. So how can the unhealthy be motivated to return to good health? If the poor health epidemic of today is due to lifestyle, then our present dire situation should be reversible by a change in that lifestyle.
