You’d rather do the backstroke through hot coals than attend, but you don’t have a choice. No, you’re better than that. You promise yourself you’re going to speak up.

What Happens Tomorrow?

You aren’t going to sit there, body hunched over, trying to make yourself as invisible as possible. This time, you’re going to walk in with your head held high, and you’re going to confidently share your ideas. You do your best to gulp down your nerves, take a deep breath, and start walking to the conference room. Every step you take, the more the doubts start creeping in. What if you stumble over your words? What if you forget what you wanted to say? What if people think your ideas are stupid? As you get closer, your heart starts to pound in your chest. Your palms get clammy, and you’re having difficulty swallowing past the lump in your throat. By the time you walk into the room, you’re terrified. All you can hear is the roar of blood rushing through your veins. You manage a few whispered greetings to your colleagues and look for a spot where you’re least likely to get noticed. As soon as you’re seated, you hunch over and try to look busy to discourage others from talking to you. Quietly, you watch your peers with admiration and a bit of envy. If only you could interact with others as easily as they do.

If only you could stand up and speak with conviction. If only, if only, if only. You know that your inability to communicate with people is holding you back in life, but what can you do? It’s not like you can get a personality transplant. And, anyway, is being able to communicate that important? You have to communicate with people, no matter what job you have. Does that mean you’re doomed to living in the shadows for the rest of your life? If you think your communication skills need work, you’re in great company. Some of the most successful people in the world started as horrible communicators. Just the thought of it made me physically ill, he said. He decided to do something about it and invested 100 dollars in a Dale Carnegie public speaking course. As part of the course, Buffet had to practice public speaking, which he continued to do even after it ended. He knew that if he didn’t keep practicing, he’d fall back to his old ways. I just kept doing it, and now you can’t stop me from talking! he said. Why did Buffet invest in the course? Because he knew that the ability to communicate would be essential to all areas of his life.

Stuck Inside A Cloud

And he considers the Dale Carnegie certificate he earned to be the most important of his degrees. Buffet explains, If you want to get ahead, focus on your communication skills. He believes communication is so valuable that he recommends it as a top skill everyone should learn. You can have all the brainpower in the world, but you have to be able to transmit it, he told Michael Hood, a recent college graduate. If you heard that Warren Buffet was talking about how to increase your worth, would you have expected him to be talking about improving your communication skills? He knew he had to improve, so over time, he put in the work and learned not to do that. Even billionaire entrepreneur and founder of the Virgin Group, Richard Branson, says that Communication is the most important skill any leader can possess. He credits much of Virgin’s success to effective communication. On his blog, Branson posted a list of his top ten quotes on communication. Communication is a skill that you can learn. It’s like riding a bicycle or typing. If you’re willing to work at it, you can rapidly improve the quality of every part of your life. If you’re not the greatest communicator right now, it doesn’t mean that you can’t get better. You have the ability and opportunity in this very moment to work on your communication skills and transform your life. Armed with the proper knowledge, strategies, and techniques, anyone can improve their communication skills and enjoy success at a rapidly increased rate. Developing your ability to communicate can be straightforward, it can be just as easy to make mistakes if you don’t know what you’re doing. Take Jimmy Fallon’s segment Hashtags as an example. It shows communication misunderstandings caused by lack of context, basic incomprehension, and autocorrect. My friend texted me that they ran a mile in under 12 minutes. I need to move on. Sent to my boss instead of my girlfriend. You might think these are funny. You might think these are cringeworthy. You might be thinking, What kind of a monster breaks up with someone over text? These are entertaining examples, but more importantly, they show how easy it is for miscommunication to happen. You develop your communication skills, your life will change significantly. You’ll find yourself getting more respect from everyone you meet. People will admire and look up to you like never before. Every interaction you have will become noticeably easier. You’ll be better equipped to help others and offer your unique value to the world. Those are things you must decide for yourself. It’s not a genetic gift.
